57E6 Pantsir
A series of Russian-designed two-stage, surface-to-air missiles with an 18 km effective range fired from the 96K6 Pantsir air defence complex. ‘57E6’ specifically refers to the 2nd stage of the missile, which contains the warhead and fuzing, but is interchangeably used to refer to the entire round. The missile uses solid fuel and has a separable booster section which accelerates the projectile before detaching shortly after launch. 57E6 munitions contain a high explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) warhead and are radio-/optical-command guided, meaning that the munition relies on guidance updates from the launch vehicle via radio link. It has seen use in the Syrian Civil War, Libyan Civil War, and the war in Ukraine.

Analyst Note:
The 57E6 series of missiles fired from the 96K6 Pantsir system use a two-stage design that is unusual for surface-to-air missiles of this type. The remnant seen in this image is part of the missile’s booster section, which accelerates the second stage to a high velocity before separating. The booster section uses a distinctive toffee-brown, filament-wound composite body. (ARES)
