Video shows US missile likely used in deadly strike on Iranian town, experts say

BBC News published an investigation alleging U.S. strikes on the first day of the war with Iran were conducted with a never before used type of missile. The strikes on 28 February 2026 reportedly hit a residential area and sports hall in the Iranian town of Lamerd and killed at least 21 people. CCTV footage published by Iranian state media and analysed by BBC Verify and weapons experts reportedly showed a U.S.-made Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) detonating in the area on the day of the strikes. The article said it would be the first confirmed use of the PrSM, the successor to the ATACMS short-range ballistic missile, in a conflict zone.

The investigation cited an OSMP entry which identified a ‘PrSM Increment One’ ballistic missile being launched from a HIMARS launcher in a CENTCOM video released on March 1st. This was believed to be one of the first operational launches of the PrSM. The OSMP analysis was used to confirm that U.S. forces were using this type of munition around the time of the Lamerd strike.

Analyst Note:
This image shows what is believed to be one of the first combat uses of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), following its entry into U.S. Army service in late 2023. PrSM is the successor to the ATACMS short-range ballistic missile that has become well known due to its use in the Russo–Ukrainian War. The Increment One version of PrSM has a range of approximately 500 km. The missile is seen here being fired from an M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). (ARES)
