Inside the Strike: The US Munition That Hit a Residential Building in Venezuela
In January 2026, Bellingcat published an article investigating civilian casualties resulting from an alleged U.S. airstrike on 3 January 2026 in the Venezuelan city of Catia La Mar which reportedly killed one civilian and seriously injured another. The strike took place during a U.S. operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Remnants found at the scene suggested an American-made AGM-88 series munition struck the apartment.
Bellingcat cited multiple OSMP munitions entries in its analysis of remnants found at the scene, including one with an analyst note which identified a BSU-60 tail fin as used exclusively by AGM-88 series missiles.
