UNIDIR: Strengthening Data Collection to Implement EWIPA Political Declaration
In March 2024, the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) alongside the Explosive Weapons Monitor published a report outlining tools for journalists, academics, and researchers to use for documentation efforts in support of the Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas (EWIPA) Political Declaration. The EWIPA Political Declaration aims to reduce the use of explosive weapons in urban areas and reduce civilian harm in conflict as a result.
In the report, UNIDIR recommended the OSMP as a tool which “supports those working with digital investigations, particularly those relating to the use of explosive weapons” and outlined the usefulness of the portal’s documentation efforts alongside its resource pages to “enhance the understanding of specific munition types, their use and their impact in today’s modern battlefields”.
